Quantum Physics

Then came the discovery of the quantum world—the world of the very small. Low and behold, a hundred years ago scientists discovered that in that world, classical physics didn’t apply. Common-sense rules work great up here where we live our day-to-day lives. But down there things work differently, in three basic ways.

1. Tiny objects (sub-atomic particles, or particles smaller than an atom) in the quantum world don’t move the same way as large objects in the classical world. Up here, things move through space in a predictable pattern from here to there. Down there, they tend to jump around, appearing “here” and then suddenly appearing over “there” without seemingly moving along any observable path between two points. Now you see it, now you don’t. Then you see it again. But now it’s not “here.” It’s over “there.”

Hence the term, Quantum Leap. How does it happen? No one knows. There are lots of theories, of course. But as of now we have to leave the question unanswered.
